Covers for Tamil books by Sri Lankan and diaspora writers — five designs that carry the tone of the writing before a single page is turned.
A good cover is a book’s first sentence. It has to stand out on a shelf and in a thumbnail, and it has to stay true to the story inside. This collection brings together covers we’ve designed for poetry, essays, political writing and post-war memoir.
Every cover starts from the manuscript. Nanthikkadal Pesukirathu uses blood-red archival photographs for a book about the post-war years, while Puli lets a tiger peer over the bottom edge of a weathered red cover. Kandathu Mozhithal tears a traditional pattern open to reveal a wall of missing-person posters. Tamil title lettering ties each one to its author’s voice.
